Open space? A bank? Same thing.

Eminent domain is a great idea. Not. If there was any justice in this world the previous owner of this lot would take Howard County to the cleaners.

I remember that this poor guy was villified in the media back in the day. They painted him as one of those fruitcakes who resist development and end up with a house in the middle of a cloverleaf.

His argument then was "Where in HoCo will I be able to buy 3 acres and a house for $382k." He had a point.

While I don't think he's got a leg to stand on legally, he's got a point. They were trying to bulldoze him on what the land was worth, in an effort to pay the lowest price possible. And of course, they were full of it.

anon9:59 - sadly, that's the way that I remember it too.

Maybe there's another angle that we haven't heard about, or maybe the Olivers caved when they should have held fast (I know, easy for me to say), but at this point it sounds like they were really taken advantage of.

I naively hoped that the development/eminent domain abuses that you see reported about in other communities would be less likely to happen here in HoCo.

Cripes.
