Since it has been getting dark earlier, I have been doing my evening runs on the treadmill at a gym instead of on the excellent bike paths in Columbia. One of the many downsides of this is that I am forced to watch the nightly news, which seems to always be on at the gym. There is an interesting series on MSNBC news called “Fleecing of America” about how the government is pissing away all of our money on ridiculous projects. I was fascinated over a government plan to spend $27 million to find an ivory billed woodpecker, which may not be extinct after all. Sounds pretty expensive, and the worst thing that could happen to the woodpecker (if it exists) is that humans find it. Not a good plan, IMO.
However, I really got a kick out of the local mayor complaining about the woodpecker program, which is funded by federal dollars. The mayor was complaining that with the money spent on the woodpecker he could re-open the local canning factory and create 30 jobs. I am busy trying to figure out which of these two projects, the woodpecker one or the factory, is the biggest waste.
