Well, civil unions and gay marriage are still illegal in
The fact that civil unions are not an option for anyone (gay or straight) is just insane. I was (and still am!) married in a civil marriage ceremony at the courthouse. As an atheist, I wanted a wedding ceremony without the spirit books, fairy dust, magic wands, flying carpets and anything else that the church might deem appropriate. However, my union is still called a “marriage”*.
Think about this: regardless of the fact that I practically have the mark of the beast on my forehead, I am involved in the religious institution of marriage. On the other hand, two gay Christians could not be legally married. If that restriction was solely up the church, I could care less. However, the State is making that decision on behalf of the church, and the State should not discriminate.
Wake up,
*The funny thing is that my wife is a catholic and a socialist. I am not making that up.

To me marriage is really a legal arrangement conveying certain rights to the partners. The authority to create that arrangement has been delegated to judges as well as rabbis, priests, and ministers. The religious component is an additional layer added by churches for those who feel it important. But for those who don't have that layer, they're no less married than me.
I also don't think of the issue as "gay marriage" but rather "same-sex marriage." There's no sexual orientation demonstration when applying for a marriage license. It's a distinction that, yes, mostly benefits gays but has broader implications for society.
K-
If I had known fairy dust was an option, you can bet we would have had that at our wedding!
I was just thinking about the terms/words used to describe gay people this morning. It's very defining. What is a gay person? Must they be defined by their sexuality? Who among heteros is defined by their sexuality - besides extremists? Not sure it's right for our society to define a whole lot of people solely by the gender to whom they are attracted. Or, is this a definition of who you sleep with? No, it's about the gender of the sexual encounter. I don't care what other consenting adults do behind closed doors, and I really wish we could find anther way to refer to people who are different, but privately so.
