Discriminatory Government Regulations

Why is our society so afraid of gay marriage? This article from the Baltimore Sun discusses how gay couples are spending big bucks on marriage-like ceremonies. The downside is that the ceremonies do not end in legal protections for each partner. While it sounds like an exercise in futility, I think that the desire for gay folks to have marriage-like ceremonies shows how stupid the government regulations surrounding matrimony really are. In my experience, the desire to deny gays the rights that the rest of us have takes root from religious principles. To my way of thinking, if marriage is a religious institution, the State should not be involved. On the other hand, if marriage is a State institution, the church should not be involved. Last I checked, gay people pay taxes and followed the other rules of our society, so why should they not be allowed the legal protections the rest of us enjoy? The inability of gay folks to marry is nothing more than State sponsored discrimination.

I would be remiss if I posted something about marriage without giving a shout out to my pretty (and young!) wife. Hi honey!
