I'm doin' alright, I'm gettin' good grades...

There is an article in the Sun today that talks about the large number of colleges that many high school students are applying to. Who could have guessed that many students like the ability to have choices about where they want to go school?

Harbom said that her guidance counselor "knew I wanted to go to a really competitive school. He didn't really try to discourage me because he knows it's my choice."

Why must students like that wait to get to college to have choices? With school vouchers or similar programs, students would have an option of attending all sorts of neat schools that would pop up. Instead, we have government run mediocrity. If public school officials are arrogant enough to think that they can adequately meet the needs of all students, good for them. I am glad they have such confidence in themselves. But make them put their money where their mouths are and compete with private schools. Saying that you are the best is easy- anybody can do that. Proving it is another matter. And quite frankly, there are quite a few Howard County public schools that are nothing to write home to mom about.
