Start the revolution

If you thought George W. Bush had any sanity left at all, this should put that notion to rest. Somehow, and I would be surprised if this is even legal, but he has effectively given himself the power of a dictator in the event of a “catastrophic emergency”.

The directive loosely defines "catastrophic emergency" as "any incident, regardless of location, that results in extraordinary levels of mass casualties, damage, or disruption severely affecting the U.S. population, infrastructure, environment, economy, or government functions."

When the president determines a catastrophic emergency has occurred, the president can take over all government functions and direct all private sector activities to ensure we will emerge from the emergency with an "enduring constitutional government."

Translated into layman's terms, when the president determines a national emergency has occurred, the president can declare to the office of the presidency powers usually assumed by dictators to direct any and all government and business activities until the emergency is declared over.

Ironically, the directive sees no contradiction in the assumption of dictatorial powers by the president with the goal of maintaining constitutional continuity through an emergency.

Well, thanks George. I will certainly sleep better.

But how can the President give himself these powers? doesn't congress have any input?

Is this just his wish list, or does he really now have these powers?

Something very similar to this was the basis for an Xfiles subplot. Basically, in the event of an emergency, FEMA could take control of the country. And of course, the Smoking Man was involved.

The fact that Bush is still president scares the bejeezus out of me. Do we need to give the guy more power?

Did we give him more power? Is this a 'done' deal?

Here's one for ya (old, but still freakin' funny)(I'm talking about me, not the link)

Lincoln gave himself the power of a dictator, and continues to be critized for it.

F.D.R. was told to take the power of a dicator, didn't and was praised for it.

Both of these men served us well, because they both had great politicial instincts and a desire to serve the people.

Bush, did not go to the world powers meeting in Kyoto concerning the enviroment, has us in a war that is, not supported by most of the the world, not supported by parts of his own political party, and not supported by citizens who voted for him. He also bungled the storm recovery efforts from Katrina.

He has not shown good political instincts, nor a desire to serve the people.

What he has shown is consistency. He consistenly shows us, he is incompetent, and a man of poor judgement. But a bigger problem may be that it may not be Bush, but those around him who have grabbed more power.

Folks we are in deep do do. How many Presidents does it take to mess up the Constition, that contract of trust betwen a government and a people.

It sounds like Bush has effectively taken powers that were previously spread to the Department of Homeland Security. The Washington Post had this rather muted article on the matter. I am not sure why this story has not been picked by mainstream media. After all, it is two weeks old now. I would think that the major papers would have been on this like white on rice.
