Illegal immigrants have found themselves under microscope due to two recent drunk driving incidents in Howard County. The focus on drunk driving is appropriate. The emphasis on the immigration status is a red herring. From the Howard County Times:

Watson also is the second Howard County resident in the past six months to be killed in a collision involving a driver who, according to authorities, was in the country illegally.

Tried and true Americans, even those as famous as Mel Gibson, Paris Hilton and Ty Pennington have recently found themselves in the news for driving drunk. To emphasize the immigration status of the criminals who drive drunk only serves to add a taint of racism to the problem.

To plagiarize my wife: “The fact is that drunk driving kills. Death sucks. People who drive drunk suck. Whether or not they are here with green cards does not increase or decrease the level of tragedy.”
