What’s that sound?

I have been busy as of late, working on an extracurricular activity. As a result, I have little time for blogging, which really doesn’t bother me that much. However, I have also had very little time for reading. That is really a downer, because reading books is one of the things I enjoy most. My commute to work is about a half hour each way. Normally, I just listen to music during the drive back and forth to work, but in an attempt to make that time more productive, I have been listening to some of the audio books available at the library.

The one I am listening to now is Fortunate Son, which thus far has been pretty interesting. This is kind of a switch for me, because I normally don’t like fiction. I have listened to some John Stossel in audio format which I enjoyed. I was able to get through half of an Al Franken audio book before I got bored. It was funny, though.

I don’t think all books would lend themselves to good audio books. Stephen Hawking’s The Universe in a Nutshell is available in audio book format. If there is a single person in this world who could make heads or tails of that book in audio format, I’d be surprised. I could not make any sense of it in written format, even with its myriad of helpful diagrams. However, most biographies, memoirs and nearly any fiction book would lend themselves pretty well to audio format.

Anyway, the point to this post is that if you have a commute of adequate length, you should hit up the library and check out an audio book that interests you. What else are going to do while aiming your car down an endless highway? Anybody have any books or audio books that they recommend?

Sorry I have no books, or audio books to recommend. I have of late, taken a different approach. Long rides in silence, no audio sounds at all. It is amazing what you can learn, in the quiet space of a car.

To break the routine, I will ride with the windows down and listen to the sounds of the road, the wind, and just remember days gone by.

As much as I love books (private library = 3,000 +), they are someone else's opinion, and it feels good once on awhile to center on my own thoughts and opinions.

I'm a big fan of David Sedaris, a hilarious memoir writer who narrates his own audio books in his fitting, nasaly voice. The library has nearly all of his books in written and recorded formats.
