The FDA is under scrutiny from Congress because drug companies appear to have too much influence over the FDA’s monitoring of drugs. If this accusation is true, the FDA is nothing more than an illusion of protection. The real layer of security has come from market pressures to put out high quality pharmaceutical products, which of course would exist with or without the FDA. However, the wasted resources and delays that the FDA creates are real costs to society. So, you could say we have incurred all the costs of FDA regulation with little or no “benefit” from an extra layer of protection that the FDA is alleged to provide. I’ll be curious to see how this shakes out.
